Looks like no Jarmo for the CBJ:
With Blues assistant general manager and director of amateur scouting Jarmo Kekalainen close to signing a three-year extension, as the team announced Tuesday, the club believes it has the right man in charge.
Kekalainen’s first draft with the Blues was in 2003, when the team chose current players David Backes in the second round and Lee Stempniak in the fifth round. In 2005, Kekalainen was responsible for picking forward T.J. Oshie, now one of college hockey’s top forwards. He also went after Swedish center Patrik Berglund, who’s playing well overseas.
“I think his record speaks for itself,” Checketts said. “I met him for the first time last year on draft day, and I thought I was in the ‘Mission Impossible’ headquarters. This guy is so disciplined and efficient and informed and effective.”
Kekalainen said that he’s excited to be part of the rebuilding project.
“I don’t like when everybody talks about the pressure,” Kekalainen said. “I don’t feel that way. I feel like we’ve got a great opportunity to show what we know and what we can do. Next summer (with 11 draft picks) gives us a lot of flexibility.”
