Disappointing game on the whole, but given how it shaped up, I’ll consider Columbus lucky to have escaped with the loser point and move on.
This was definitely a winnable game. The Jackets jumped out to the fast start and had the Preds back on their heels, but let them back into it with a combination of sloppiness and anemic special teams. Yeah, I know the PP did get one last night, but when Columbus was gifted a four minute PP late in the first, they could get nothing going. Had they scored the fourth goal then, I think it would have changed the game and Nashville wouldn’t have marshaled the comeback. Instead, they got the mental boost by killing off what was really an unjust penalty — Umberger was hit by Novotny’s stick — and spent the next period and a half taking it to Columbus. Jackets did get the late flurry to even the score, and successfully killed off their own four minute penalty which went into OT…which is why I’ll take the point. But Novotny on the SO? Ugh.
And just to continue a theme of pointing out what other teams do better than the Jackets in terms of fan experience — could the Jackets’ program makers take a lesson from Nashville? Theirs (which is free, like ours) at least has some fresh content, information about the team they’re playing that night and how they match up with the Preds, etc. I am as compulsive a collector of hockey memorabilia as you’ll find, and I’ve pretty much stopped picking up the programs at Jackets games. And if I do pick one up for the lineups, I usually throw it away or leave it in my seat after the game. That’s how worthless our programs are.
It’s always fun to go to a game in Nashville. Would have been more fun if the Jackets had come away with two points.
