Filatov scratched again

Healthy scratch against LA. How long before people are writing him off as a “bust”?

It’s clear that Filatov is a really talented player. But he’s still smallish and the coaching staff and management clearly do not feel he is ready for the night-in, night-out grind in the NHL. This can be a little frustrating for fans, who would like to see more of what Filatov can do. But at least the team is in the position now of having the luxury to bring along an offensive talent like Filatov slowly. A few years ago, he would have been thrown in the deep end because the Jackets needed scoring from anyone, and damn the long-term consequences (see Brule, Gilbert). I will do my best to remain patient.

Although it does beg the question of whether Filatov would be better served playing regularly in Syracuse rather than warming the bench in Columbus? Perhaps a touchy issue, given the controversy at the end of last season, not to mention Filatov’s comments in the off-season. But at a certain point, it does seem like if he’s deemed not ready for prime time, he should be back in the minors.

  2. I’d like to thank you for being a voice of reason on this topic. We tried to say the same thing not that long ago and were dismissed as backward hillbillies by the omnipotent geniuses on the HFBoards. It’s nice to see someone else out there has some logic and rational thought capabilities.
