Once again, not the world’s most stylish win, and they sure did look like they weren’t going to hold on to the 1-0 lead throughout much of the second period. And the 5-on-3 kill in the third was a bit of a nail-biter. But the Jackets did manage to hang on for the much-needed two points.
It was good to see a couple of struggling sophomores play important roles tonight. The much-maligned Steve Mason finally got his first shutout of the year, stopping 32 Panther shots. And Derick Brassard, who was expected to have a big year but has definitely had some struggles, added the crucial second goal late in the third period to put the Jackets more firmly in command of the game.
This win probably doesn’t mean that all is well with the Jackets and the struggles are over. Florida is a struggling team themselves. But anything to maybe kickstart some better play. And they’ll get to put that to a pretty tough test immediately, as they head out to Nashville for a game tomorrow night. That’s never a real promising place for the Jackets, so if they could steal a point or two tomorrow night, it would be big.
